Have you heard of IKEA hacks? IKEA furniture is notorious for its very plain, yet inexpensive nature. No frills. Many fancify (probably not a word) these pieces which means they customize plain IKEA pieces in order to make them look higher end. Here is an example.

Now, you can customize these pieces and more with overlays. Danielle Oakey did a great television spot on her local morning show on Overlays recently. Overlays are thin (1/8 of an inch thick) patterns made from pvc substrate. They are paintable. Here are some examples of overlays.
Danielle Oakey customized a $7.99 end table from IKEA with overlays. The overlay itself is around $50 according to Danielle, but well worth it for a customized look.
This company makes many that are meant for IKEA pieces such as the RAST and MALM.
