House Project – Amanda from Our Humble ABowed

It’s always fun to peek inside of someone else’s house and see their projects.  Today Amanda is sharing about her kitchen project.  Take it away, Amanda!

For the past five years, Ben and I have been brainstorming, tweaking, and planning the perfect kitchen remodel. At the beginning of October, we finally started. Here’s what we’ve done so far.

Planned every little detail

including ceiling to counter cabinets, all drawers below, sleek stainless appliances, and a custom apron front sink. With a solid plan, Ben started building our cabinets.

Then we spent more money on a vent hood and a backless slide in range. With the pieces of the puzzle on order, we started the dirty (but rewarding) work, demo. First up, tearing out the soffit and some sheet rock to expose the studs.

The following weekend, we did more demo work. Knocking down the Berlin wall dividing the living room and kitchen.

Our first step to recovery rebuilding was installing the vent hood.

Initially, we thought we’d have granite counter tops, but we finalized our decision to go with wood after seeing the slabs in person.

With all the planning done, the real demo work started; tearing out the old cabinets and floor.

After a full day of floor removal, we finally started the rebuilding phase. First order of business: install the new hardwood floors.

Then cabinets and our custom-made stainless steel apron front sink. You don’t realize how difficult it is to live without a kitchen sink until you no longer have one. It’s nice to have it back.

It was also nice to have the new range and cabinets in place. Progress was quick considering we lived without a sink and stove for four days.

To me, nothing says high-end kitchen like nice appliances and a built-in refrigerator.

To give the cabinets a more custom look, we added decorative trim to the cabinets.

The biggest items are underway, so we started picking out some of the smaller details like lights. Then, something monumental happened. We installed our wood counter tops and painted the cabinets!

Over Thanksgiving weekend, Ben hung our upper cabinets and toe kicks, complete with mood lighting.

Oooh, ahhh. And now, we’re working on finishing up the drawer fronts.

We’ve come a long way, but still have plenty of work to do. Next up we’ll install the drawer fronts, build cabinet doors and shelves, put up trim, wire lights, add a marble back splash and much more. Please stop by to follow along.

Thanks, Kristy for having us today!

Wow, I cannot wait to see how it turns out.  Thanks for not being afraid to share the process and how it gets a little chaotic before it gets pretty!

  1. Love it! :) I’ve been following the renovation over on Our Humble A(Bowe)d, so it’s fun to see all of the process put together in one post! Can’t wait to see the finished result!

  2. So much work but there is nothing like a new kitchen! Anxious to see it finished!

  3. Yay look how far it’s come! Lovely!

  4. What a great post! It’s always fun to follow a renovation from scratch!
